BLEND-S

Maika Sakuranomiya has trouble finding a part time job, thanks to the scary look of her eyes. Yet, with a stroke of luck, she gets scouted for a cafe called Stile, where the waitresses take on personas such as yandere or younger sister. Maika is given the sadist persona and the anime is about her developing her sadist personality and the people she interacts with in the cafe.

The main characters of this anime consists of mainly odd balls. The first one is Kaho Hinata, a high school girl who has been allocated the tsundere personality. She is addicted to video games and the arcade, which often results in her running through her money pretty quickly. When customers talk about games, she has trouble keeping her personality and feels the need to join in. Mafuyu Hoshikawa is one of my favourite characters in this series. She is a college student with a petite figure, which resulted in her being given the little sister personality. She rarely shows emotion, but loves anime. Her favourite is ‘Magical Frill’. Miu Amano is a doujinshi artist who fulfils the older sister trait in the cafe. She is often seen wearing glass and loves to watch people. Dino is one of the most important characters as he is the owner of the cafe. He is an Italian chef, who loves anime and often stays up late to watch it. His nose bleeds whenever he gets excited and he soon develops feelings for Maikia, even though she is unaware of this fact. The last character, is Koyo Akizuki. He is also a chef at Stile and loves Yuri. He wants to be out front, so he can see female customers being friendly to each other.

This anime consists mainly of chibi people and light humour. Each episode is a skit and doesn’t follow any real plot line. This is one of things I like about it as, it is something light hearted to cheer me up after a long day at work. The personalities all fit the cafe they work at and all seem to be very well developed.

One of the things I do not like about this anime, is the fact that they make a point of Maika saving up to visit foreign countries in the beginning of the anime but then, it hardly ever comes up. This is something I feel that the anime could have developed and could have possibly made a plot line of. The anime focuses on the hobbies of the other characters more than Maikas, the main character, which is a real let down.

Overall, the anime is light hearted and funny. It is something that I would recommend if you are feeling particularly stressed and feel like forgetting about life.

A Restaurant to Another World

A Restaurant to Another World, is a light novel turned anime, that has just finished its twelfth episode on Crunchyroll. The anime focuses on a western style restaurant, that opens up to a fantasy world on the day of Satur. There is no explanation in the anime about this particular day, but one can only assume it is our equivalent of a Saturday. The rest of the time, the restaurant is open on our side to the normal people of Japan.

There are many characters that appear throughout the anime,  but the ones I like the most are Alleta and Kuro. Aletta is a down on her luck demon, who stumbles on the door one day. That day she is offered a job in the restaurant, but just for that one day of the week. Kuro is a dragon of death, who lives on the moon so she doesn’t hurt anyone, as creatures are sensitive to her death magic. She is forced upon the master by her other dragon friend Red, who she comes across in the restaurant. She suppresses her magic by turning into an elf, which means she is able to be with the other diners. She talks telepathically to the diners, Master and Aletta.

Regarding the story line, there doesn’t appear to be an ongoing theme. Each episode shows each character as they stumble upon one of their doors and, the reaction they have to their food. The characters order the same thing every time they go, so the food name is their nickname to the other diners. As someone who is interested in cooking, this peaks my interest the most, as you see snippets of master making the food. However, their reactions can seem a little over dramatic and hit in the food porn category. These reactions remind me of Shokugeki no Soma, but without the stripping scenes.

The voice acting is right on par with the character. Each voice actor suits the character and their personalities. The voice actor choices for these roles were Junichi Suwabe (master), Sumire Uesaka (Aletta) and Saori Onishi (Kuro). The character designs on the other hand, are pretty basic. The master is in normal chef whites and the girls are in french maid outfits. The elves are in green and the lizard men only have loin cloths. This part makes me think that the anime was relying on the food to carry them throughout the series, when there is more that could have been done.

Overall, the anime is a good watch. You learn new recipes and get get immersed in different characters individual stories each week.  I will worn you now though, it can make you pretty hungry!

Summer Season Choices 2016

Shokugeki no Soma Season 2

This starts from where it left off in last years anime season. The Autumn Election finals are under way, with strong characters like Soma and Megumi representing the misunderstood Polar Star Dorm! Who will be the ultimate winner?

Momokuri

In this anime you get a lovely mixture of cute and damn right crazy. This is about a girl called Yuki Kurihara, a second year high school student, who falls in love with Shinya Momotsuki, a boy a year below her. She takes secret photos of him for her ‘Momo-kun Photo Collection’. When the collection hits a hundred, she decides to confess to him. He agrees to go out with her and, the anime follows them as they progress in their relationship.

This Art Club Has a Problem!

This Art Club Has a Problem! is about a group of middle school students who are a member of the schools art club. One member, Uchimaki Subaru, uses his skills to create the perfect 2D Waifu, whilst another member ,Usami Mizuki,  pines over him whilst drawing normal things. The president sleeps all the time on the sofa, whilst a strange foreign student called Colette, pops up every now and again. This anime is random and sometimes hits on dangerously boring.

NEW GAME!

After graduating high school, Suzukaze Aoba gets a job at a gaming company called Eagle Jump. It is not any ordinary gaming company though, as it is the company that produced ‘Fairies Story’, the game that she obsessed over as a child. The anime is about her getting her footing in the company, learning design and making new friends.

Sweetness and Lightning

Kohei lost his wife six months ago and is now a single father of his young daughter Tsumugi. He can’t cook and has trouble balancing his professional life as a teacher. Over a chance encounter at a flower festival, he meets Kotori, a student in his class. Her mum is a busy professional cook and owns a restaurant, yet she can’t cook herself. The anime is about them learning to cook together with his daughter and, trying yummy food!

Amanchu!

Last but not least is Amanchu, an anime about a young girl nicknamed ‘Teko’, who moves to a new school is a new town. She meets a girl nicknamed ‘Pikari’, who is a diver at the local diving school, of which her grandma owns. Pikari introduces Teko to the wonderful world of diving, accompanied by their new friends at the schools diving club.

Anne-Happy

Tennomifune Academy, is an elite academy. There are three groups of students; one that studies academics, one that studies sports and lastly, the happiness class. These students have been assessed based on their luck and have been deemed unlucky. Every lesson is a ridiculous task to increase their happiness, led by an overpowered bipolar home room teacher and a small rabbit robot called Timothy, who Anne tries to hug all the time, but always fails.

The main characters consist of five girls;  Anne Hanakoizumi (mentioned above), who is terribly unlucky with pretty much anything. Ruri Habarigaoka, who is in love with a construction sign, so deemed unlucky in love.  Botan Kumegawa who cannot stand physical activity and anything really, without falling to pieces, so unlucky in health. Lastly are the childhood friends Hibiki Hagyu and Ren Ekoda. Hibiki is unlucky with navigation, so gets lost twenty four seven, whereas Ren,  has a condition where females of all species are attracted to her. She wakes up every morning with female animals on her, when she sleeps with her window open.

This anime is incredibly colourful, simplistic and as you may have guessed it, happy. The whole anime reminds me of rainbows , confetti and sweets. The characters are adorable teenage girls, with huge eyes and cute natures. Their voice acting is incredibly charming and very realistic. The only thing I did not like about it was its story line, or lack of. Each episode is a random adventure, spouting about dreams and friendship. It is more of an anime for a child. It had so much going for it, yet due to this points, it went down on my list. Overall, it probably earned four out of ten.

Flying Witch

Right, now that my wordpress is allowing me to blog, I can finally give my review on ‘Flying Witch’. Thank you all for your patience and happy reading!!

Flying Witch, is about a young 15 year old professional witch called Makoto, who moves to the countryside to study witchcraft. She stays with her relatives, who have had witches on her side of the family, stay with them before her. The anime is about her making friends, farming and studying witchcraft. Yes, I said farming.

This anime is quite chilled out and, could be seen as boring. Yet, as a practising witch, this hit close to home. It is the most realistic representation of witchcraft I have seen to date. The spells are complex, they use candles and witchcraft symbols. I found it very interesting and equally entertaining. I found the anime so interesting, that I started growing herbs on my kitchen windowsill. I wanted to see what farming felt like for myself.

The art is very simple, yet has fantastic animation when the characters are not involved. There was an episode with a huge stone whale and, it showed every detail and movement. The voice acting on the other hand, is a completely different story. The voices chosen did not suit the characters and, in come cases, the voices were so unusually low, that I felt like I was going to fall asleep.

Witch that said, I can confidently say that the anime should be scrapped and, if it interests you, just read the manga. It is ten times better.

This Seasons Anime – My Following List

For this season, I have only managed to find a few that I could actually get into. The whole end of the world theme, that has been following most of the anime this season, isn’t really my thing. In my current state, I can only deal with happy anime mainly. That is the bugger of mental health really. But, don’t let that fool you. My taste is usually OK in general. So here it is ladies and gentleman, a peak into my Crunchyroll following list.

Flying Witch

This anime, is full of calm and is very easy to watch. It follows a young witch called Makoto,  who moves to a beautiful county city in Aomori. She moves in with her non witch relatives, along her black cat Chito. The anime is about her witch training and, who she encounters along the way.

Anne-Happy

Tennomifune Academy, is an elite academy where students train in either academics or sports. That is everyone, apart from class 1-7. These students have been assessed based on their luck and, take a course to increase it. Anne Hanakoizumi is terribly unlucky. She falls into man holes and gets attacked by animals, despite her positive nature. Ruri Habarigaoka is unlucky in love. She is in love with a sign in construction sites and, keeps a picture of it in her pass case. Botan Kumegawa is unlucky in health. She injures easily, but because her dad is a doctor, she can treat them efficiently. Lastly there is Hibiki Hagyu and Ren Ekoda. Hibiki has a terrible sense of direction and gets lost easily, whereas Ren, her childhood friend, has a condition where females of all species are attracted to her.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

This one is a very very chilled out anime. It may have the ability to put you to sleep. The anime is about Tanaka-kun, a listless student who is always dozing in class and acts tired when awake. He is looked after by his friend Ohta, who makes sure he gets to class on time and eats properly.

Toradora!

This week I watched Toradora!. This is a light novel turned anime series, which was released in 2008. The story is about a second year high school student named Ryuji Takasu, who looks like a thug, but actually has a gentle personality. He meets a small hot headed girl named Taiga Aisaka and, through a series of events, they end up working together, to get closer to the people they are in love with. Ryuji is in love with Taigas best friend Minori Kushieda and, Taiga is in love with Ryujis only friend Yusaku Kitamura. Minori is an extreme and energetic personality, who works hard at school and holds lots of part time jobs. Yusaku is the vice president of the student council and, a member of the soft ball team, along with Minori.

The beginning of the anime is pretty good. It follows Ryuji and Taiga in their daily lives, tormenting one another and developing a friendship. Having found out that she lives next door, Ryuji cooks for her and makes her lunches everyday. She eventually becomes one of the family and, is loved by Ryujis’ unconventional mother Yasuko.

The anime takes an unpleasant turn as the series goes on. A new character is introduced, Ami Kawashima. Everyone thinks she is a cute air head model, but really she is a spoilt princess, who puts on a persona. She is childhood friends with Yusaku. She begins to see that Taiga and Ryuji are in love with each other and, she develops feelings for Ryuji herself. She becomes mean to all of them, making snide comments, because she can’t stand how stupid they are being, in not confessing to each other.  I found this very annoying and, it overshadowed what could of been some really good scenes.

Another unpleasant turn the anime takes, is its knack for the over dramatic. The characters yell at each other, cry and fight each other, when all they had to do was say how they felt. You end of turning the volume down on the TV, because their voices hurt your eardrums.

This anime had the potential to be very good, but the moment Ami came in and, the moment they started yelling at each other, they completely lost me.

Oni Ai

This weeks anime of choice is Oni Ai, a light novel turned anime. The story is about two siblings who move in together after being separated for six years. Akito, the brother, transfers schools to be with his twin sister Akiko. Akiko has a brother complex, constantly hitting on and showing love for her brother. After their summer together, three girls move into the dormitory, turning this incest anime into one of a harem.

The harem consists of three cute girls. Anastasia is a half American, half Russian rich girl, who is the owner of an international company and a second year at Liliana High School. She is the Vice President of the Student Council. The next girl is Arashi, a third year in the school and the President of the Student Council. She has two different colour eyes, so she is seen wearing an eye patch most of the time. She is sexually aggressive, earning the nickname ‘Predator’. Her aim is to make the whole of the Student Council her harem. The last girl to move in is Ginbei. She is Akitos childhood friend. She moves schools to be with him and, has a boyish way about her, due to being from a merchant family. She does most of the cooking and cleaning in the house and, is the accountant of the Student Council.

So far, I have only made it to the sixth episode of the anime, when a new dormitory manager comes in, who happens to be his fiancée. Another girl entering the competition was enough for me. The anime is very hard to get through, as it is full of cliché’s. You have seen everything before. The only thing I liked about it, is that the President is bisexual and the epitome of female empowerment.

This anime is definitely not one that I would want to push on people, so I have to give it a straight up no.

Girl Friend Beta

Girl Friend (Kari) started off as a dating simulator Japanese game, that was released on smart phones in 2012. The game became so popular, that an anime was released in 2014. The anime looks at high school, through the point of view of different cute high school girls.

The first character that is introduced is Kokomi Shiina. She is a second year student, who is part of the rhythmic gymnastics club. She goes to school every morning before classes, to train for her competitions. She pops up now and then after the second episode, taking part in the other girls stories. There is also Akane Sakurai, who is part of the broadcast committee. She is the host of her lunchtime radio show.

My favourite combination of girls are Erena Mochizuki and Fumio Murakami. Erena is an outgoing girl who is part of the photography club. She takes photos of girls that she finds cute an interesting. Her best friend is Fumio, who is a quiet girl who manages the library. The episode on how they become friends is interesting and slightly hits the yuri category, in a good way of course.

The last girl that will steal your heart is Chloe Lemaire. She is a French transfer student, that has been living in Japan since her first year at high school. She always spends her time researching Japanese culture in the library and, loves all things Japanese. She makes mistakes in her Japanese, of which her friends often end up correcting her.

As an anime, I love the premise of it. It is a light hearted anime, that shows adorable girls running around leading their lives. The colours are light and beautiful, with lovely and outstanding characters, who shine through. Their character design is ten to none. The only thing you may notice is that all the characters sound the same. You need to persevere through this, as they introduce new characters and break them up as the series goes on.

Overall, I recommend this anime to anyone who is feeling low. It will cheer you up in a second.
