Konohana Kitan

Konohana Kitan is a Japanese manga series, that has hit the screens this season. After ten episodes in, I am still unsure about what it is actually about. From what I can gather, a young fox girl called Yuzu gets sent to an inn by her guardian. This inn, is primarily run by fox people. The first few episodes cover her training and brings the personality of the other characters through, whilst the other episodes after that focuses on  the visitors. This is when the strange begins, with things happening in the inn that I am not entirely sure about myself. Sometimes I blink and stare at the screen blankly, trying to absorb the mystery of it.

When it comes the characters, even though they are fox people, they are primarily like young teenage girls. Satsuki is a serious minded workaholic who dreams about becoming a Miko (a shrine maiden). She works harder in order to make up for her feeling of incompetence, kind of like I do with my job. She has a soft spot for Yuzu but she tries not to show it. Natsume is the prince fox girl. She is an attractive tomboy who is playful but courageous at times and she stands up for her childhood friend Ren. Ren is a perfectionist and very feminine. She takes pride in her appearance and the appearance of others, and often gives the girls make overs. She performs her work well and sees Natsume as her boyfriend figure. Throughout the episodes, the anime hints at her having a crush on Natsume. Sakura is the small fox girl who doesn’t say anything and often has a blank expression. She is often seen doing strange and sometimes genius things. She has an obsession with Okiku, who is a cursed doll that is brought to the inn for purification. Lastly there is Kiri, who is the oldest and the head of the group. She is the most experienced and often tells the others what to do.

This anime is set in a fantasy world, full of magical creatures and gods. This leads to questioning who the visitors are and what they do. The visitors are often from Japanese folklore. This with the tradition inn, gives it a very oriental and relaxed feel. These, mixed with the realistic characters, makes the anime very likeable.

The negatives of this anime are the lack of structure and plot in every episode. This leads to staring at the screen trying to figure out what is going on, when you should be enjoying the anime.

Overall, I feel that the lack of plot hinders the anime to the point where I do not feel that it is even watchable.

In Another World With My Smartphone

If you ever woke up and found out that you were accidentally killed what would you do? What would you do if you were then told you would be resurrected in another world, where you would have magic and can make one request? Well apparently Touya kept his cool and chose to ask for his smart phone. This anime is about him navigating this fantasy style world with his smart phone, whilst gaining a harem along the way.

When Touya first joins this new world, he comes across a pair of sisters in the street. They are Linze and Elze Silhoueska. Linze is a magic user who can only use light, water and fire. Elze is the oldest sister, who uses a gauntlet and a neutral spell which allows her to cast ‘boost’,which enhances her physical attributes. They end up as travelling buddies and they help Touya discover that he can use all magical attributes, which is part of an apology from god. Later, they are joined by a Samurai called Yae Kokonoe, who is travelling trying to become stronger, and a girl with mystical eyes called Yumina Urnea Belfast. Yumina can see a persons true nature and, seeing that Touya is a good person, she decides to become his fiance. She is the first one to admit her feelings for him.

These characters form the first main group to join Touya and eventually fall in love with him. Later, more women join him, including a 400 year old Fairy. When watching the anime, it only becomes apparent in the last few episodes that it has become a harem anime. They all fall for Touya and decide to become his brides. I found this annoying, as it appears that females cannot travel with males without falling in love. Another thing that bothered me about this anime, is the fact that Touya is so overpowered. He never comes to the verge of loosing in any battle and he wins in silly ways which makes the most powerful entities think he is strong. An example of this is when he uses ‘slip’, to make a monster they are having trouble with slip over and over.

Even though I have been piling on the negatives, I did like the background music to the fights. They chose a folk violin sound, which makes me feel like I am in a real time fantasy world. The voice actors also suit the characters, which helps with the immersion. Sadly, I find this the only redeeming factor.

Overall, I would not make the effort to watch this, unless you are a fan of Rosario Vampire.

Keijo

Keijo, otherwise known as Hip Whip Girl, is about a gambling sport which hit Japan over the 21st Century. The Keijo sport involves a group of women, fighting to knock each other off the floating platforms on a pool, otherwise known as land. The only catch, is that they can only use their breasts and bums.

The anime revolves around Nozomi, a starry eyed gymnast, who graduates school and aims to become the richest Keijo player in Japan. She comes across a former judo champion in a Keijo arena, Sayaka, and soon they become friends and rivals. They attend the Western Keijo School and work together to become the best.

This anime focuses on character development as well as fan service. There is a girl called non, who has a soft butt, so she has the ability to knock people off with their own impact, otherwise known as counter. She starts off as afraid of the other players, but soon gains confidence and moves to the top ranks with the other girls in her dorm. Sayaka compensates for her small breasts and works towards becoming the fastest Outfighter in Japan, using her speed and her butt. Kazane starts out soft spoken and unsure of herself, by the end of the season she becomes a strong player with her scanning hand, the ability to copy anyones’s once she places her hands on their butt.

The whole idea of Keijo seems to be very sexist with a main male crowd. In the manga, the professional races start with parading the butts so that the gamblers know who to put their money on.  Yet the anime makes up for that misgiving when you see the abilities the girls have. They are so silly yet incredibly entertaining, it is like they have super powers.  I wont give the entertainment away to my readers, but it is something to be thoroughly enjoyed.

Overall, this anime is right up my perverted ally. It has the right amount of character development and boobage, with some typical yet amazing anime fight scenes. I can’t wait for season 2 to get here!

Summer Season Choices 2016

Shokugeki no Soma Season 2

This starts from where it left off in last years anime season. The Autumn Election finals are under way, with strong characters like Soma and Megumi representing the misunderstood Polar Star Dorm! Who will be the ultimate winner?

Momokuri

In this anime you get a lovely mixture of cute and damn right crazy. This is about a girl called Yuki Kurihara, a second year high school student, who falls in love with Shinya Momotsuki, a boy a year below her. She takes secret photos of him for her ‘Momo-kun Photo Collection’. When the collection hits a hundred, she decides to confess to him. He agrees to go out with her and, the anime follows them as they progress in their relationship.

This Art Club Has a Problem!

This Art Club Has a Problem! is about a group of middle school students who are a member of the schools art club. One member, Uchimaki Subaru, uses his skills to create the perfect 2D Waifu, whilst another member ,Usami Mizuki,  pines over him whilst drawing normal things. The president sleeps all the time on the sofa, whilst a strange foreign student called Colette, pops up every now and again. This anime is random and sometimes hits on dangerously boring.

NEW GAME!

After graduating high school, Suzukaze Aoba gets a job at a gaming company called Eagle Jump. It is not any ordinary gaming company though, as it is the company that produced ‘Fairies Story’, the game that she obsessed over as a child. The anime is about her getting her footing in the company, learning design and making new friends.

Sweetness and Lightning

Kohei lost his wife six months ago and is now a single father of his young daughter Tsumugi. He can’t cook and has trouble balancing his professional life as a teacher. Over a chance encounter at a flower festival, he meets Kotori, a student in his class. Her mum is a busy professional cook and owns a restaurant, yet she can’t cook herself. The anime is about them learning to cook together with his daughter and, trying yummy food!

Amanchu!

Last but not least is Amanchu, an anime about a young girl nicknamed ‘Teko’, who moves to a new school is a new town. She meets a girl nicknamed ‘Pikari’, who is a diver at the local diving school, of which her grandma owns. Pikari introduces Teko to the wonderful world of diving, accompanied by their new friends at the schools diving club.

Anne-Happy

Tennomifune Academy, is an elite academy. There are three groups of students; one that studies academics, one that studies sports and lastly, the happiness class. These students have been assessed based on their luck and have been deemed unlucky. Every lesson is a ridiculous task to increase their happiness, led by an overpowered bipolar home room teacher and a small rabbit robot called Timothy, who Anne tries to hug all the time, but always fails.

The main characters consist of five girls;  Anne Hanakoizumi (mentioned above), who is terribly unlucky with pretty much anything. Ruri Habarigaoka, who is in love with a construction sign, so deemed unlucky in love.  Botan Kumegawa who cannot stand physical activity and anything really, without falling to pieces, so unlucky in health. Lastly are the childhood friends Hibiki Hagyu and Ren Ekoda. Hibiki is unlucky with navigation, so gets lost twenty four seven, whereas Ren,  has a condition where females of all species are attracted to her. She wakes up every morning with female animals on her, when she sleeps with her window open.

This anime is incredibly colourful, simplistic and as you may have guessed it, happy. The whole anime reminds me of rainbows , confetti and sweets. The characters are adorable teenage girls, with huge eyes and cute natures. Their voice acting is incredibly charming and very realistic. The only thing I did not like about it was its story line, or lack of. Each episode is a random adventure, spouting about dreams and friendship. It is more of an anime for a child. It had so much going for it, yet due to this points, it went down on my list. Overall, it probably earned four out of ten.

Flying Witch

Right, now that my wordpress is allowing me to blog, I can finally give my review on ‘Flying Witch’. Thank you all for your patience and happy reading!!

Flying Witch, is about a young 15 year old professional witch called Makoto, who moves to the countryside to study witchcraft. She stays with her relatives, who have had witches on her side of the family, stay with them before her. The anime is about her making friends, farming and studying witchcraft. Yes, I said farming.

This anime is quite chilled out and, could be seen as boring. Yet, as a practising witch, this hit close to home. It is the most realistic representation of witchcraft I have seen to date. The spells are complex, they use candles and witchcraft symbols. I found it very interesting and equally entertaining. I found the anime so interesting, that I started growing herbs on my kitchen windowsill. I wanted to see what farming felt like for myself.

The art is very simple, yet has fantastic animation when the characters are not involved. There was an episode with a huge stone whale and, it showed every detail and movement. The voice acting on the other hand, is a completely different story. The voices chosen did not suit the characters and, in come cases, the voices were so unusually low, that I felt like I was going to fall asleep.

Witch that said, I can confidently say that the anime should be scrapped and, if it interests you, just read the manga. It is ten times better.

This Seasons Anime – My Following List

For this season, I have only managed to find a few that I could actually get into. The whole end of the world theme, that has been following most of the anime this season, isn’t really my thing. In my current state, I can only deal with happy anime mainly. That is the bugger of mental health really. But, don’t let that fool you. My taste is usually OK in general. So here it is ladies and gentleman, a peak into my Crunchyroll following list.

Flying Witch

This anime, is full of calm and is very easy to watch. It follows a young witch called Makoto,  who moves to a beautiful county city in Aomori. She moves in with her non witch relatives, along her black cat Chito. The anime is about her witch training and, who she encounters along the way.

Anne-Happy

Tennomifune Academy, is an elite academy where students train in either academics or sports. That is everyone, apart from class 1-7. These students have been assessed based on their luck and, take a course to increase it. Anne Hanakoizumi is terribly unlucky. She falls into man holes and gets attacked by animals, despite her positive nature. Ruri Habarigaoka is unlucky in love. She is in love with a sign in construction sites and, keeps a picture of it in her pass case. Botan Kumegawa is unlucky in health. She injures easily, but because her dad is a doctor, she can treat them efficiently. Lastly there is Hibiki Hagyu and Ren Ekoda. Hibiki has a terrible sense of direction and gets lost easily, whereas Ren, her childhood friend, has a condition where females of all species are attracted to her.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

This one is a very very chilled out anime. It may have the ability to put you to sleep. The anime is about Tanaka-kun, a listless student who is always dozing in class and acts tired when awake. He is looked after by his friend Ohta, who makes sure he gets to class on time and eats properly.

Toradora!

This week I watched Toradora!. This is a light novel turned anime series, which was released in 2008. The story is about a second year high school student named Ryuji Takasu, who looks like a thug, but actually has a gentle personality. He meets a small hot headed girl named Taiga Aisaka and, through a series of events, they end up working together, to get closer to the people they are in love with. Ryuji is in love with Taigas best friend Minori Kushieda and, Taiga is in love with Ryujis only friend Yusaku Kitamura. Minori is an extreme and energetic personality, who works hard at school and holds lots of part time jobs. Yusaku is the vice president of the student council and, a member of the soft ball team, along with Minori.

The beginning of the anime is pretty good. It follows Ryuji and Taiga in their daily lives, tormenting one another and developing a friendship. Having found out that she lives next door, Ryuji cooks for her and makes her lunches everyday. She eventually becomes one of the family and, is loved by Ryujis’ unconventional mother Yasuko.

The anime takes an unpleasant turn as the series goes on. A new character is introduced, Ami Kawashima. Everyone thinks she is a cute air head model, but really she is a spoilt princess, who puts on a persona. She is childhood friends with Yusaku. She begins to see that Taiga and Ryuji are in love with each other and, she develops feelings for Ryuji herself. She becomes mean to all of them, making snide comments, because she can’t stand how stupid they are being, in not confessing to each other.  I found this very annoying and, it overshadowed what could of been some really good scenes.

Another unpleasant turn the anime takes, is its knack for the over dramatic. The characters yell at each other, cry and fight each other, when all they had to do was say how they felt. You end of turning the volume down on the TV, because their voices hurt your eardrums.

This anime had the potential to be very good, but the moment Ami came in and, the moment they started yelling at each other, they completely lost me.

Oni Ai

This weeks anime of choice is Oni Ai, a light novel turned anime. The story is about two siblings who move in together after being separated for six years. Akito, the brother, transfers schools to be with his twin sister Akiko. Akiko has a brother complex, constantly hitting on and showing love for her brother. After their summer together, three girls move into the dormitory, turning this incest anime into one of a harem.

The harem consists of three cute girls. Anastasia is a half American, half Russian rich girl, who is the owner of an international company and a second year at Liliana High School. She is the Vice President of the Student Council. The next girl is Arashi, a third year in the school and the President of the Student Council. She has two different colour eyes, so she is seen wearing an eye patch most of the time. She is sexually aggressive, earning the nickname ‘Predator’. Her aim is to make the whole of the Student Council her harem. The last girl to move in is Ginbei. She is Akitos childhood friend. She moves schools to be with him and, has a boyish way about her, due to being from a merchant family. She does most of the cooking and cleaning in the house and, is the accountant of the Student Council.

So far, I have only made it to the sixth episode of the anime, when a new dormitory manager comes in, who happens to be his fiancée. Another girl entering the competition was enough for me. The anime is very hard to get through, as it is full of cliché’s. You have seen everything before. The only thing I liked about it, is that the President is bisexual and the epitome of female empowerment.

This anime is definitely not one that I would want to push on people, so I have to give it a straight up no.
