This Seasons Anime – My Following List

For this season, I have only managed to find a few that I could actually get into. The whole end of the world theme, that has been following most of the anime this season, isn’t really my thing. In my current state, I can only deal with happy anime mainly. That is the bugger of mental health really. But, don’t let that fool you. My taste is usually OK in general. So here it is ladies and gentleman, a peak into my Crunchyroll following list.

Flying Witch

This anime, is full of calm and is very easy to watch. It follows a young witch called Makoto,  who moves to a beautiful county city in Aomori. She moves in with her non witch relatives, along her black cat Chito. The anime is about her witch training and, who she encounters along the way.

Anne-Happy

Tennomifune Academy, is an elite academy where students train in either academics or sports. That is everyone, apart from class 1-7. These students have been assessed based on their luck and, take a course to increase it. Anne Hanakoizumi is terribly unlucky. She falls into man holes and gets attacked by animals, despite her positive nature. Ruri Habarigaoka is unlucky in love. She is in love with a sign in construction sites and, keeps a picture of it in her pass case. Botan Kumegawa is unlucky in health. She injures easily, but because her dad is a doctor, she can treat them efficiently. Lastly there is Hibiki Hagyu and Ren Ekoda. Hibiki has a terrible sense of direction and gets lost easily, whereas Ren, her childhood friend, has a condition where females of all species are attracted to her.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

This one is a very very chilled out anime. It may have the ability to put you to sleep. The anime is about Tanaka-kun, a listless student who is always dozing in class and acts tired when awake. He is looked after by his friend Ohta, who makes sure he gets to class on time and eats properly.

Toradora!

This week I watched Toradora!. This is a light novel turned anime series, which was released in 2008. The story is about a second year high school student named Ryuji Takasu, who looks like a thug, but actually has a gentle personality. He meets a small hot headed girl named Taiga Aisaka and, through a series of events, they end up working together, to get closer to the people they are in love with. Ryuji is in love with Taigas best friend Minori Kushieda and, Taiga is in love with Ryujis only friend Yusaku Kitamura. Minori is an extreme and energetic personality, who works hard at school and holds lots of part time jobs. Yusaku is the vice president of the student council and, a member of the soft ball team, along with Minori.

The beginning of the anime is pretty good. It follows Ryuji and Taiga in their daily lives, tormenting one another and developing a friendship. Having found out that she lives next door, Ryuji cooks for her and makes her lunches everyday. She eventually becomes one of the family and, is loved by Ryujis’ unconventional mother Yasuko.

The anime takes an unpleasant turn as the series goes on. A new character is introduced, Ami Kawashima. Everyone thinks she is a cute air head model, but really she is a spoilt princess, who puts on a persona. She is childhood friends with Yusaku. She begins to see that Taiga and Ryuji are in love with each other and, she develops feelings for Ryuji herself. She becomes mean to all of them, making snide comments, because she can’t stand how stupid they are being, in not confessing to each other.  I found this very annoying and, it overshadowed what could of been some really good scenes.

Another unpleasant turn the anime takes, is its knack for the over dramatic. The characters yell at each other, cry and fight each other, when all they had to do was say how they felt. You end of turning the volume down on the TV, because their voices hurt your eardrums.

This anime had the potential to be very good, but the moment Ami came in and, the moment they started yelling at each other, they completely lost me.

Oni Ai

This weeks anime of choice is Oni Ai, a light novel turned anime. The story is about two siblings who move in together after being separated for six years. Akito, the brother, transfers schools to be with his twin sister Akiko. Akiko has a brother complex, constantly hitting on and showing love for her brother. After their summer together, three girls move into the dormitory, turning this incest anime into one of a harem.

The harem consists of three cute girls. Anastasia is a half American, half Russian rich girl, who is the owner of an international company and a second year at Liliana High School. She is the Vice President of the Student Council. The next girl is Arashi, a third year in the school and the President of the Student Council. She has two different colour eyes, so she is seen wearing an eye patch most of the time. She is sexually aggressive, earning the nickname ‘Predator’. Her aim is to make the whole of the Student Council her harem. The last girl to move in is Ginbei. She is Akitos childhood friend. She moves schools to be with him and, has a boyish way about her, due to being from a merchant family. She does most of the cooking and cleaning in the house and, is the accountant of the Student Council.

So far, I have only made it to the sixth episode of the anime, when a new dormitory manager comes in, who happens to be his fiancée. Another girl entering the competition was enough for me. The anime is very hard to get through, as it is full of cliché’s. You have seen everything before. The only thing I liked about it, is that the President is bisexual and the epitome of female empowerment.

This anime is definitely not one that I would want to push on people, so I have to give it a straight up no.

Super Sonico the Animation!!

A few days ago, whilst roaming through Crunchyroll, I found an image. This image was of a cute girl, with big boobs and a clumsy look. I am not usually into that kind of anime (being a small boob lady myself), but it looked so happy, I had to give it a try.

Super Sonico is a mascot for Nitroplus, the computer and video game company. She has appeared in games such as SoniComi (2011) and SoniPro (2014). She hit the big screens in early 2014, in SoniAni: Super Sonico the Animation.

When I started watching it, I had no idea Super Sonico was a game idol (I thought it was a every day life anime, of a cute shapely girl in interesting clothes) Yet, when you watch the anime you get little clues. In the anime she is referred to as ‘Super Sonico’ and, most of the end credits are in 3D.

The anime itself is happy, bouncy and very ecchi. You get an insight into a life of a hard working girl, with very far fetched jobs. You come across interesting people, with interesting friendships and interesting personalities. It is colourful and energetic. Overall, I am happy to say, I love it.

Girl Friend Beta

Girl Friend (Kari) started off as a dating simulator Japanese game, that was released on smart phones in 2012. The game became so popular, that an anime was released in 2014. The anime looks at high school, through the point of view of different cute high school girls.

The first character that is introduced is Kokomi Shiina. She is a second year student, who is part of the rhythmic gymnastics club. She goes to school every morning before classes, to train for her competitions. She pops up now and then after the second episode, taking part in the other girls stories. There is also Akane Sakurai, who is part of the broadcast committee. She is the host of her lunchtime radio show.

My favourite combination of girls are Erena Mochizuki and Fumio Murakami. Erena is an outgoing girl who is part of the photography club. She takes photos of girls that she finds cute an interesting. Her best friend is Fumio, who is a quiet girl who manages the library. The episode on how they become friends is interesting and slightly hits the yuri category, in a good way of course.

The last girl that will steal your heart is Chloe Lemaire. She is a French transfer student, that has been living in Japan since her first year at high school. She always spends her time researching Japanese culture in the library and, loves all things Japanese. She makes mistakes in her Japanese, of which her friends often end up correcting her.

As an anime, I love the premise of it. It is a light hearted anime, that shows adorable girls running around leading their lives. The colours are light and beautiful, with lovely and outstanding characters, who shine through. Their character design is ten to none. The only thing you may notice is that all the characters sound the same. You need to persevere through this, as they introduce new characters and break them up as the series goes on.

Overall, I recommend this anime to anyone who is feeling low. It will cheer you up in a second.

Himouto Umaru-chan

Himouto! Umaru-chan is a Japanese manga series written by Sankaku Head. It was adapted to an anime by Doga Kobo July this year. It ended on its 12th episode in September. The anime is about a high school girl called Umaru, who has amazing grades and it good at everything. On the outside she is the perfect student, who is adored by everyone. Yet, when she comes home, she morphs into a layabout, with a liking for cola and gaming. She lives with her older brother Taihei, who she sponges off of, much to his dismay.

The episodes follow Umaru, as she leads her everyday life with her friends and her brother. Each episode has about three different scenarios, which are the short chapters in the manga. The episodes are a mixture of cute and funny, with highly ridiculous and unique scenarios thrown in.

I loved this anime so much, that I watched it three times, read the manga and decided to cosplay for expo. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

The Perfect Insider

The Perfect Insider (Subete ga F ni Naru), consists of an assistant lecturer, a cute rich student and an idolized reclusive scientist. Mix all of these with a lab on a far away island in the middle of the sea and, you get this anime.

The anime was founded on a mystery novel by Hiroshi Mori in 1996. It began airing in Japan this month and, it has not failed to impress its audience. The story revolves around Sohei Saikawa, who is a member of Saikawa Research Lab and, Moe Nishinosono, the daughter of Sohei’s mentor. They take a trip with the other lab members to Dr Magata’s Lab, on an island in the middle of nowhere. Here, they discover a corpse and work to find the killer.

The anime has only released two episodes so far, not giving much away. You would not know what the anime is about, if you haven’t read the novel or manga adaptation already. What it has shown so far though, is very interesting, with a hint of creepy. The graphics are the epitome of modern anime animation and, the characters are more modern looking than cute.

I would recommend this new seasons anime, as detective mysteries appear to be in fashion at the moment and, it is something different.
